How do I transfer all my templates to my new computer?

I have just replaced my computer and have installed VF on it. I tried to copy my previously saved templates over from my old machine (I have quite a few because we make a lot of animated videos from scratch - frame-by-frame) but even when copied over they don't show in the template pull-down options. There must be some way of transferring these templates. Any suggestions?

Hi
I am not sure but you can try this, rather than copying the templates that you need, copy the whole folder.
Use Windows explorer, navigate to programs and then VF, then look in the folder for a sub folder called templates or the name of the folder that contains the templates. Copy to a cd or zip drive whatever. When you have installed VF onto your new computer copy your old template folder from the cd or zip drive into the same folder as your new one, Windows will ask you if you want to overwrite the folder, say yes.

I'd start by either copying or renaming the folder on the target machine. Just in case!

Thanks Ian, This was one of the first things we tried. The cryptic folder name suggests it somehow hooks into a registry, so although the templates are all there, they still don't show on the pull-down menu. Any other suggestions?

A tricky one this. I'm not sure how to import templates into a program. This could be more of a pc tech question. You've tried click and drag via WE - what about via My Computer?

You're right, it's all tied up in the registry! The cryptic folder name you mentioned is a registry key, the template name is a value and the file name is data. Rather than me trying to describe it, try creating a new template on your target system, with an unambiguous name such as "thisismytesttemplate", and then look for it in the registry. You can add your templates by updating the registry entries (I've done it), but it'll be tedious if you've any significant number! I'd strongly recommend you take a copy of the registry first and less strongly recommend you have a look at Mike Funduc's Registry Toolkit. It's much quicker than Regedit and the GUI give you a much more comfortable feel for what's going on. BTW, I have no connection with them, I'm just a satisfied customer.

I don't know if this thread's still alive, but Registry Toolkit supports scripting. This makes adding large numbers of templates much easier.

Thanks Ian, Sorry for the long delay - we had a conference here and were all tied up in it. just getting back into a routine again. I'll give your suggestion a go and will let you know. We have a network nurse keeping our network alive and I'll see if I can get his guidance too. It would be great if Sonic Foundary would bake a small tool to do this. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation.

I've just realised there's a way of doing this that doesn't require hacking the registry. Assume you want to end up with MyTemplate1, MyTemplate2 & MyTemplate3.
Go into VF and create 3 new templates with those names - the contents don't matter. Now delete MyTemplate1.sft, MyTemplate2.sft & MyTemplate3.sft and replace them with the real .sft files you've copied from your original PC. Job done!
