I somehow locked my "event/pan" window down in the left hand corner. It now appears as a small box with a tab much like the Media Pool. How do I unseat it from there so that it opens as it's own window again?
Look along the left edge of the Pan/Crop window; you'll see a thin grey line running almost the entire height of the pane. Grab onto this line with the mouse, hold the button down, and drag it towards the top of the screen. When you move it, it will detach and become free floating again.
This is one rather non-intuitive element in the Vegas user interface. To see that line or bar as a "handle" takes some imagination. No wonder people get frustrated over it - even though it is mentioned in the manual (page 24 rather than 21 in my version).

I'm not really sure why this is such a problem in Vegas. Many other Windows-based programs, including MSIE and MS-Office use exactly this same method for docking/undocking various screen elements, right down to the same thin graphic line at the left edge of the element. Hmmmm. Perhaps the difference is that in almost all other software it's used for tearing off menues and button bars but in Vegas it's used for larger elements like windows. In any case, there is ample GUI precedent for this Vegas feature in other software and chances are everyone has already done exactly this same operation countless times before.
Of course, careful when you undock it and move it around when trying to see what's behind it. It's bound to pop back into a hole somewhere if you move it too much (page 1853 1/2 in the manual next to the note which says refer to page 666 3/5).
Also took me awhile to be able to grab it and move it at first. I was going to post here as you did, but fortunately I found it under the section of the manual entitled "Intuitive Vegas Anomalies You don't Dare Post About".
Saved me a scolding.
>careful when you undock it and move it around when trying to see what's behind it. It's bound to pop back into a hole somewhere if you move it too much<
You can avoid windows popping into place by holding the Ctrl key.
Last week, I lost my preview window that way. Moved it too fast, it went out the screen. Found it in the kitchen, popped into the sink.

I am about to post a question, but first:
DISCLAIMER:
1. I spent the entire night reading the manual.
2. It's 8:22AM Eastern time now and I am finished going through the manual for the SECOND time so I am now going to post a question.
3. I appologize to any videoguy who might find this in the manual anyway.
4. I am wearing a BRAND NEW contact lens prescription and haven't quite gotten used to it.
5. I have used the SEARCH engine on this site and have searched posts back to before Vegas Video was introduced.
6. I have also searched through Google (formerly Deja.com) for posts regarding this matter using Boolean language.
7. I have a friend who works at the New York Public Library who got special permission to stay there all night to help me research this matter. He has turned up NOTHING.
8. A multilingual friend of mine in London phoned me at 7:15AM EST to let me know that it isn't mentioned in The Bible, The Old Testament, The New Testament, The Koran, The Mahabharata, or The Guardian.
9. I asked my dog "SAM" and he just barked a resounding "NO" !!!
10. It isn't mentioned in any of the hint books for Sony Playstation 2.
So here goes:
How do I get a Vegas window out of the kitchen sink?
Well first you need either a mouse with a VERY long cord or a wireless mouse. You dangle that near the sink and the window will grab the bait, and be sucked up through the mouse port back onto the desktop where it belongs.
Ah yes! The ole Vegas-Window-in-the-Kitchen-Sink bug . . . There's a long thin Grey line parrallel to the the draining board . . got it? - That's the one. Now, using the egg slice just Scrape and Hold . . bectha Gatsey aint got THAT in the next OS!!!
. . . hey ho it's so good to be useful to someone . . .
