I have some Fx plugins from JMH, and some of these have GenMed as part of the chain. How DO you ADD a GenMed to an FX Chain, and thus Save as an NEW FX Chain?
I read it, I thought about it and then realised I've never even saved an FX chain so I'm not going to be much help.
I know you can use gen media in some FXs however I *think* they're called by one of the FXs itself and are not in the chain itself. The media generators in Vegas are not FXs, they create media, it appears in the project media just the same as clips. You'll see this quite dramatically if you start with a 4:3 project and create gen media and then change to a 16:9 project. The media you created stays as 4:3 whereas the FX all adjust to the project settings.
What that'd have to do with an FX chain is the FX that references the gen media will not be able to find it as it would not exist until you
created it.
In Adobe Premiere at least 12 years ago there was a Gradient dissolve transition, where you could select ANY saved grayscale gradient to do a temporal/spatial dissolve, then drag a slider to make the transition hard or soft.
Pixelan Spice Master has used the gradient to great effect, but I've never thought Vegas should have been without it - put dissolve transition and grayscale gradient media generator on a collision course somewhere beneath the Alps, and you'll get just what I'm after.
I was just playing around with the Luminance dissolve in Vegas. That gives you exactly what you're after. However you can only use either the video itself to create an optical dissolve or you can use a greyscale that is in a file, you cannot use Gen Media. I made my greyscale from gen media, by taking a snapshot to a png file.
With the Luminance pluging you can roll your own equivalent of most of the spice transitions.
If you want to see FX chains really come to life, AE has some very powerful tricks using expressions in it's equivalent of FX chains. By chance the one I just looked at uses what is really gen media but the gen media is being controlled by the master opacity slider for the whole chain through an expression. In all fairness you could get the same outcome in Vegas but it's more work as you've got to adjust each FX by itself plus you need several tracks. Horses for courses as learning AE is a LOT more work....and it costs.
"I read it, I thought about it and then realised I've never even saved an FX chain so I'm not going to be much help."
Hold that thought guys! - the fact you haven't saved an FX chain, not the other bit! LOL!
"I know you can use gen media in some FXs however I *think* they're called by one of the FXs itself and are not in the chain itself." On what are you basing that bit of fine "logic" - as you say you haven't saved an FX chain? But let's not dawdle over this too much .. moving on . . oh yeah, they ARE appearing as part of the chain. I could show you! But as you haven't saved any chains . . .
"The media generators in Vegas are not FXs," Yup! With you so far. Yes, MedGens ain't Fxs . .
" . . . they create media, it appears in the project media just the same as clips. " Yup, agreed, and I know this too .. moving on .. ( stay awake in the back there!!)
"You'll see this quite dramatically if you start with a 4:3 project and create gen media and then change to a 16:9 project. Yup, an example too! Got that, excellent . .. moving on . ..
"The media you created stays as 4:3 whereas the FX all adjust to the project settings."
"What that'd have to do with an FX chain is the FX that references the gen media will not be able to find it as it would not exist until you created it. Yes, exactly. Now HOW does it do it??
You have gone through the process of labelling and defining what DOES happen, but I want to know is HOW you get GenMEds as part of an Fx CHAIN - 'cos I have masses of them that show exactly THAT! I can apply these FX and GenMed combos to existing Events. But as you haven't played with them how would know what I am talking about.
Oh, and BTW, Bob, in my Plug-In Chooser I have ( most probably like you too!) a folder that INCLUDES Media Generators, which are almost "crying-out" to be used in conjunction with FXs. In fact I have created one of my own and that resides in that folder too.
Believe ot or not, Bob, I have Fx chains that have GenMEds within them! And that is STILL after you telling me how things work.
If you were on SKYPE right now I would point my camera at the screen!
