What are you recording to? (cam, portable audio recorder, other?) Does the mic have a 3.5mm mini-plug, XLR or other? Same question for the recording device. Are using an adapters?

Are you using an external mic pre-amp or mixer? If so, a common mistake is feeding line level (typically +4dB) into a mic level (-50dB) input which will usually result in distortion regardless of the record volume setting.

using my Canon Rebel SL2 with the boya M1 mic. the subject sounds muffled but the treble is loud and static. almost like when you speak into a mic really close (like your mouth is literally over the mic)

If the mic has a four-section TRRS plug, it's probably wired for a smartphone, (usually Sleeve= audio /// Ring 2= shield/ground), which could be the problem. I also believe your cam supplies 'Plug-in Power', so you do not need a mic with a power supply.. also a possible cause. I would try another mic with a three-section TRS plug (Tip & Ring= audio left & right. Sleeve=shield/ground), and no in-line power supply
I would also not expect pro quality from a $20 mic. Even with a great mic under optimum conditions, DSLRs do not have pro quality sound either, so many DSLR folks use a separate audio recorder.

That makes a lot of sense. I will definitely take all that into consideration. I'll go ahead and purchase that sound equipment. Thank you very much!
