How do you guys delete origional avi footage?

I probably am just dis-organized. But I have several avi clips on my firewire drive and now I have so many, I want to delete some avis but don't know which projects use what. Is there an easy way or a software app that can read a veg file and tell what is used and allow me to delete the raw footage and keep the veg so I can recapture if I need it?

I don't know if i can help your past, but to make your future easier you might consider making a directory for each project, then dump all necessary files in that directory. When you're done with the project, delete all the large captured source files and back up what's left. I do occasionally end up with some overlap ... a file or two being used by more than one project. Unless it's a terribly huge AVI file i'll stick a copy in each directory as necessary. That way if i delete it from one directory, it's still there for the other projects to use from their own directories.

Ah-ha! That relates to a question posed earlier today in the thread to "Question For BillyBoy", wherein it was suggested that the capture-file be separated from the rest of the VV-files.

For each project, I have been putting everything in one folder on my external drive so I can find if later (all my poop in a group, so to speak). But now I'm concerned that I may be slowing things down (or worse).

On a related note, I had asked here previously if there was a way to designate a specific/unique folder for all files while working a specific project. As it is now, just about every function (capture, edit, video, etc) has to be individually told which file to use/select when starting on a project, and I wanted to know if a blanket command could be used. Chienworks, I think it was you that gave me some tips, but I think the gist was that there was no one overall way to do it (unless I didn't understand the answer - which is very likely - I'm not too computer-literate).

Maybe keeping capture (and other functions) separate is why?

This is a total pain in the ass but I ended up in your sitch with my last deal. What I did was one by one went through and opened each part of my vid ( as in each scene or project ), chose " save as ", and would make a new folder on my desktop for each part and than " Copy and save media with project " ( I'm wirting this from memory ). Some of the clips I would have it trim if I was fairly confidant that I wouldnt need to tweak it later, others I would have it copy the source. Than I copied all of that over to my external HD, delete the folder from the desktop, and than open the backup copy just to make sure it had everything. Once I did that for all my project I went through and cleaned house, opening up about 300 gigs on the four internal hd's I have.

Hope that works for ya. Not fun but the best I solution I could find for my prob.
