Am I the only one that thinks ZippY is having a bit of fun with the Vegas community with all his (or her) posts? I'm fairly new around here...maybe I'm wrong...but is it all a big joke?
I've put about 50 markers on the timeline already. I'm not about to go back and put them somewhere else. If Vegas won't let me lock them to the events because I chose to put them via the timeline (which by the way is more intuative) instead of via the trimmer, then that is a sad piece of work!
So my response is ....NO! I'm not about to go put them in your so called "right" place.
Zippy... you seem to enjoy complaining about what you can't do your way, rather than learning HOW TO DO something how its suppose to be done.
The markers are designed to be used to mark a position on the timeline which is a constant reference. I think there is a way to use regions, but I don't know about anyone else, you've just about wore out my patience always bitching about something, so I'm not about to look it up.
Hint #1 If you don't like Vegas... try something else.
Hint #2 You earn a right to "bitch" AFTER you learn how to use the application and maybe help some that have helped you. You on the other hand only bitch and don't bother to learn the application and just keep asking questions you could EASILY find on your own IF YOU MADE THE EFFORT which obviously you don't.
Maybe ZippY is a "plant" from a competitor. I often visit user forums to get an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of a software package. Even though user forums tend to attract people having problems, you can soon tell who is having more than others (look at Pinnacle's Studio 8 forum). ZippY's first post was "Vegas:RIP?":
--"I just want to know whether or not I should invest my time and money with Vegas? It looks as if it is going to take a dive and I'm wondering since I'm just now learning the program maybe I should switch tracks and learn Avid Xpress or Final Cut Pro instead."
Practically every post since has been a complaint about some perceived deficiency or other - I think Grazie listed them more elegantly than I ever could in a previous post. Yet, for a guy (or gal) who is so keen on "learning" simple industry standard programs like Avid, FCP, or Vegas, he showed an uncanny familiarity with high end film cameras in the answer to a post about Saving Private Ryan:
--"It's actually acheived by decreasing the shutter angle on a motion picture camera. Most motion picture cameras utilize a 180 degree shutter or 172.8 degree shutter at 24 fps. Panavision cameras can go down to 1 degree, if that is ever desired. The effect in Saving Private Ryan was done this way. Not sure of the exact shutter angle used, but obviously tighter than 172.8."
As I said earlier, maybe I'm wrong (in which case, my sincere apologies Zip). Maybe ZippY has a lot of cranky days - I have my share too. Maybe I just have too much time on my hands. I am quite new to this whole video thing...
You don't. Think about it. Suppose you have (gods forbid) a hundred tracks. What are you locking the marker to?
The only way to lock a marker to a media clip is to set it and save it in the trimmer. The trimmer is there to work on a single file at a time.
Where the trimmer seems to fail is that there doesn't seem to be a way to match a mark there with a mark on the timeline. Not surprising really as there are a lot of cases where it wouldn't work.
When you set a mark in the media you'll see the mark on the event in the timeline.
Get familiar with the three post-edit ripple commands found in the edit menu. It took me all year to get to them but now I know they do some things I always wanted in Vegas.
Thanks Rob Mack. You've been the most helpful of all.
Hugo, I've spent years operating motion picture cameras.
Gkvidguy, Why are we able to make markers via the timeline? The timeline is the most intuitive place to put markers....quick references. If I mark the head of a clip on the timeline I want the marker to slide with it when I move the clip (whether it's intentional or via ripple).
Again, if you drop a marker on the timeline, which event should it be locked to? What if you have a stack of 5 events? 100 events?
I suppose you could design the program to allow you to drop clips on events instead of on the TL-but vegas doesn't do that and I kind of bet that not many others do it either.
Or, you could design the application so that if you right-click on the marker you could have the option to "Lock to Event...". That would lead to a dialog listing all the events under the marker. You could choose one and only one. SOMEONE would then complain that you can't lock a marker to two different events...
Really, this is typically a job for the trimmer. Granted, the trimmer in vegas could be more powerful than it is.
In the here and now, if you want a marker to follow an event you just moved, hit <CTRL+F> to make it follow the last edit.
Play with the ripple edit commands. They are the key to adapting to your problem.
The answer is the "Post-Edit Ripple". Edit>Post-Edit Ripple> All Tracks Markers and Regions... or buy selecting "All Tracks Markers and Regions" from the pop-up menu when you hold down the Auto-Ripple Button.
I’ve sat by quietly and watched this thread and others and I’ve got to agree with Gary. He gave you the same answer 8 posts ago! It was:
You just make sure the freakin' ripple is on when you move the event!
Now he wouldn’t have use the word freakin' if you didn’t first. And from the exclamation point at the end of his “terse” reply, I would venture to guess that he would have elaborated on his explanation so that you would have gotten it right the first time if you had been considerate and humble enough to just admit that you’re having problems and would like some help instead of filling our forum with a bunch of “Vegas sucks” posts.
So I’ve gotta go with BillyBoy on this one. Try and understand how Vegas works first and then apply it to the way you work. Sometimes there is a good reason for the way things are.
BTW, another way to move all the markers and events is to use the Insert menu and select Time... and type the amount of time you’d like to insert. This will move all the events and markers over by that amount of time.
I know Zippy can be a right royal pain but he certainly brings a lot of useful stuff out for me to learn.
One of the issues I see is NLEs are so affordable now everyone wants to have a go, what's forgotten is the years pros have spent getting familiar with the tools they use. That's also why its very hard to get them to use something new. I was initially amazed at the number of editors using gear that seemed way way past its use by date, I'm now starting to understand why.
Even to get them to take a serious look at something new is difficult because they risk dumping from memory what's in their brain, I know that fear only too well. Age bring experience but it gets harder to change the way you do things, you suddenly face the thought of having to start all over again.
> there is a very useful feature called "Ignore This User."
I don’t think Zippy deserves to be ignored. He’s not trying to be malicious. If you look back over his posts, he sounds enthusiastic yet frustrated and some people just react different than others when they encounter a problem. Myself and others were just pointing out that, in our little community, remaining calm and methodical will get you more help then screaming ”the sky is falling” at every turn. ‘nuf said.
