i've got a set of turntables going through a mixer and want to record some live scratching in my VMS project while listening to tracks previously recorded. i've always previously just imported audio so this is new to me. can anyone improve on the "how to record audio" tutorial. i didn't get past the part about the windows settings. i've got a line running into my mic jack so far.

The show me how tutorial is very straight forward and easy. As for getting past the Windows settings.....

Double click on the Speaker (sound) icon in the lower right corner (click the expand arrow if needed to show it). After the Volume Control window opens, click on Properties in the Options menu, click the Recording radio button. Make sure Microphone is checked. The window (dialog box) will change to Recording Options, make sure Microphone has a check mark in the Select box. Adjust volume if needed. Your microphone input should now be ready to record in VMS.

Search the forum for "voiceover" as that's sort of what you're doing.

Outside of VMS....

You could use a program like Audacity, tutorials HERE

ok, cool, thanks for pointing that out. i'm catching on. so, then after that i should be seeing levels in the mixer section of VMS? because nothing is showing yet. btw, i switched to "line in" (which i'm assuming corresponds to "in" on back of computer) and checked it instead.

Why do you assume that? Unless there are two "in" ports in the rear .. if only one than it is likely a mic port .. but .. sometimes it's a dual use port that will take both types of signals ... anyway ...

Once you get it recording I think you may have another problem ... playing back the existing tracks while you record.

there are both "mic" and "in" 1/8inch jacks marked distinctly as such on back of the computer. i plugged into "in". would this correspond to "input" in the windows dialogue box?

if so, once i send the audio signal can i expect to see levels in the VMS mixer section? will i be able to hear/ record live signal while listening to existing tracks?
