How do you render as a series of frames?

Hi all.

I set an In and Out in my timeline and went to render that section as a series of frames, but couldn't find any such option in the Render dialog. What the hell? In any video app you should be able to render a sequence out as individual bitmap files. Was this capability overlooked in Vegas?

Furthermore, even if I wanted to tediously advance through the timeline and use the snapshot button to save each frame, the only options there are JPEG and PNG! What's the story here?

Thanks.

Gavin

To save a series of frames you need to use the frame export script. To use scripts you need to install the Microsoft .NET files. If you search the forum for "frame export" or "microsoft .net" you can find the links somewhere for these files (i'd post the links but I haven't downloaded them since V4 was released, and don't know where they are!). Would of been nice if this had been built into vegas.

As for the JPG PNG formats, those are the only ones Vegas will export, even with the script. They are both exported at their highest quality, so they are TIFF quality.

I don't think you can render in such a format.

But with scripts, good one HappyF! I've read a few posts on this forum and there MUST be a way with those... Maybe kindly ask *jetdv* to write one for you if it doesn't already exists. He seems to be really good at it (solved a guy's problem in a few minutes yesterday...).

My second guess is that you'll have to render in uncompressed AVI and use this file in another program to do this. I'm not sure but I think Irfanview (free app) can handle this.

Vegas can now frameserve with the free plugin created by THE man Satish..it is free to download on his site the link is

The script is already written. It is called RenderImageSequence.js and can be downloaded from http://www.sonicfoundry.com/download/step2.asp?DID=447. Just click on Vegas Sample Scripts.

The only formats allowed are PNG and JPG. You MUST use one of these two.

The alternative of Frameserving may also suit your needs. Be sure to check that option as well.

Frameserving to VirtualDub and using FILE/SAVE IMAGE SEQUENCE otta do it.

That sounds like an extra few steps above using the script. No? Maybe I missed an issue about file formats, like png isn't acceptable for stocestack.

Aside from frameserving, could render to a lossless format and then frames from V/Dub. Or use the script and then batch convert the jpgs or preferably the png.

FWIW, while not that widely implemented, nothing wrong with the png format at all. Should stand up to anything else, without the side effects of jpg.

The downside to saving snapshots in Vegas is that they are automatically scaled to the right pixel aspect ratio. This reduces image quality (however little) and makes it pretty slow. Frameserving is a lot faster since there's no scaling involved, and if you're going to use the images as stills in a video project there's no need to scale back and forth.
