how do you suppress vegas' cruel whims?

am i doing something wrong here? i insert the edit i/os, highlight, and cut, and the timeline yanks a random chunk of adjoining, non-highlighted video with it. upon closer inspection, it sometimes does more than that.

i don't get why after working only on tracks 11 and 12 for the last couple days my source tracks (1&2) now have a bunch of random gaps and pastes over them.

actually, all my tracks have a bunch of random oddities like that in them now. kind of frustrating considering i can't just go back in the edit history and lose all my work. any solutions/preventive measures to take for the future?

Is "ripple edit" on? If so, and the results are unintended/undesirable, turn if off

i keep ripple on, primariliy because i made the faulty assumption that this prevents anything from overlapping.

so there's no way to just take out all the stupid layers and respread all the video out on one visible layer?

Not at this point. If you've rippled everything, the easiest thing to do is to select the gaps between events with ripple on, and then press DELETE. This will kill the gapping and slide everything together.
Vegas isn't cruel, it's just that you need to learn the workflow. Then you'll fly with it.

It is always a good idea to save a new version every once in a while, and especially when there is a significant change in the project. That way you can revert to an earlier version if things get totally wacked out.

just turn on ripple for a single track.

Now all lower case! Welcome back. I would try to help you with your problems but I'm still using Vegas 3 and it works just like the manual states.
