How do you use Auto Ripple?

DavidPJ wrote on 6/5/2004, 6:18 PM
Everytime I'm working on a long project and making lots of edits my additional video or audio effects tracks get out of sync because sometimes I'm turning on or turning off Auto Ripple to make the edits.

How do you use Auto Ripple and always keep added tracks in sync with the primary video/audio tracks? Do you using grouping?

Thanks.

By rippling all affected tracks. Group added audio such as stingers or transitionals to the media they are related to.
This is one place where multiple grouping would be wonderful.

Could I also add some mechanism to display what the groupings are. At the moment this is rather seat of your pants stuff.

In addition to what Spot wrote, my advice is to use post-ripple (Ctrl/F) instead. It gives you more of a chance to see what's moving around.

As Gary says, Post edit ripple is the way to go - that way you have full control of when and how ripple works - I never have auto ripple enabled.

Full ripple (all tracks, regions and markers) is Ctrl/Shift/F, or better still, a single button on Contour Shuttle Pro.

That raises a question - I haven't yet looked at V5's keyboard mapping, but maybe you can set up your own shortcut.

That's not a bad idea, creating and identifying groups (colored borders?) would be a nice idea. More than once auto-ripple has snuck up and smacked me. Darryl

Thanks for the suggestions. Post Edit ripple and more use of grouping sounds like the way to go. Colored coded or some kind of indication of event groups and members is an excellent idea.

Also, after looking at the auto ripple type choices on the toolbar, mine was set to affect "only the affected tracks" (default in Vegas 5?) rather than affect "all tracks, margins, and regions". I suspect this is what has been causing me grief.

Use caution, auto and post ripple can erase work in both V4 and V5.

In some cases (especially when rippling to the right) it is wiser to use the select tool rather than auto or post ripple.

This problem should be embarrasing to the software developers and should have never made it to V5.

swarrine,

How are you using the select tool to avoid what I described? Sorry, I don't understand.

Using the select tool, select all the clips on all the tracks you wish to move then drag it. Essentially, you are creating a temporary group that can be moved as a block.

One note to this method, markers and regions will not move with their clips.
