How easy is it to add effects...

I have read this manual over and over and over. I take it to work, I read it in the car, I have even taken it to the bathroom with me, and I still can't figure out how to do one simple effect. I tried to have vegas studio help guide me thru as well, with just a little help.
When I see my clips on the video track I freak out! Its like looking at a roll of film. I am also afread that I will lose my audio ( the little mountains and peaks also scare the crap out of me)
I just want some transitions, or cross overs, or fade outs, anything!! Something that a first grader could do, well maybe better than that, i am definately willing to learn.
I have already spent hours with this program. I have officially made my office into a movie studio, but I am making " B" rated films at this time....Please help me...I really appreciate it.

First of all, you shouldn't sound panicky or frustrated.
When you delete things in the timeline, they are not really deleted. The original footage exists on your harddrive.
If they get deleted from your timeline, just drag and drop from the explorer or media tab onto the time line again

A quick method to learn transistion effects would be just drag and drop two video clips so that they overlap

Then select the transistions tab on the bottom menu, drag an effect to the place where you had overlap the two clips and you are done.
Preview and see the transistion come into effect.

Take some time to try and experiment after reading the manual as a picture (Monitor screen) tells a thousand words.

Have a nice day

Try also: Click Help and click Show me how. It guides you through several editing (and other) tasks telling you what to do and what to press and it waits kindly until you have done the right thing - then it brings up the next step etc.. It is very understandable because you can get the guidance even using your own videoclips and stills.

Two words: Unlimited Undo

Go crazy. Nothing is undoable. And, as mentioned, nothing ever changes in your original clips.

If that doesn't do it, then when you have something good save your project file with a different name to a safe place. You can always go back that way.

Maybe if you describe a specific effect you were hoping to create we can get you going; once you start you won't stop!
