I got a new computer designed for gamers (Acer Predator) with plenty of ram and CPU. Sony Vegas 15 was crashing hard on my project. I changed two things and one of these did the trick:

I had a lot of tracks so I consolidated and got rid of two.

I right clicked and said "Run as Administrator" -- for some reason it said it wasn't being run with administrator privileges.

Now it's fine.
