How long HD,SD

How long would it take HD to be the way SD are,end to end ,from camcorder to delivery with very very few compatibility issues. And how much longer before SD start fading into legacy, based on current technological trends.

The price differential has to lower drastically.
I produce videos for the lodging industry. I had several requests
for HD but when they found out the cost to upgrade the
equipment in their computer/cable tv racks, the request quickly cooled.

(An PCI card that converts a transport stream mpeg to a digital cable
channel costs me $2500 not to mention what I have to charge to produce
the video itself)
