How-To: 2 versions of same title

Here’s a quick & very basic tutorial on including 2 versions of the same video on your DVD. To keep it simple I added a minimum of features - it can be expanded on - and I ran through a quick DVDA project to make sure I wasn’t forgetting any of the steps (do something enough and I tend to go on auto-pilot & not pay attention till I screw up.) This should work with DVDA 4 or 4.5 at least, probably 3, & I used the latest version of PGCEdit set to WinXP compatibility in Vista 32 Home Prem SP1 (it still crashes on program exit, but what’s one more button to click?).

Step 1) I imported mpg2 & ac3 files for the main title, double checking all chapter markers as well as sub timing in a single movie project.

2) Next step I created 2 menus with button links between them to switch back and forth.

3) I dragged my video file/title to the first menu [Menu 1] in the “Project Overview Window” [henceforth called the tree on the left]. Double clicking Menu 1 puts it in the preview panel, where I can customize the link as needed.

4) Right clicking the Menu 1 button for my video title I select copy, double click Menu 2 in the *tree on the left*, & right click Menu 2 in the preview selecting paste. A Dummy Copy of my video title now appears below Menu 2 in the tree on the left.

Note: for more involved DVDs where it’s necessary to have 2, separate title sets, you’ll need to import a dummy video & replace it with your title after the DVD’s rendered to hdd - this copy procedure just get’s you two titles, which are really just 2 individual cell play lists.

5) I double click the video title for Menu 2 to get to the time line, making careful note of the chapter markers I want to save, & their times - I also jot down the numbers to delete in a separate column. I save the markers & the project, then starting on the right, delete the markers I don’t want - if you start on the right the changing numbers aren’t critical since you’ve already done those. Deleting the first chapter is a pain, since what you really have to do is drag the IN marker, & the first chapter to where you want your edited version to start.

6) Double clicking Menu 2 to bring it up in the preview, I right click the title button and select insert scene selection menu, naming it & the resultant button scene short just so I’ll remember.

7) Going back to the timeline for Menu 2's title, I put the first marker & in point back, then load the markers I saved - right now if I left them alone with numbers missing, all I’d have is fewer chapter numbers... I need the chapters/cells so I can skip over them.

8) Saving the project again (I’ve actually done that several times, so feel free to CTRL + S as often as you think about it), I go to Menu 1 and create a scene menu the same way.

9) Now it’s time to tidy up the remote buttons and button navigation, then render the project to hdd. Remember that if you want you can save a copy of all the IFO files and BUPs in case you need to re-render in DVDA - PGCEdit will change the times, and DVDA will insist on rendering from scratch unless you copy the copies back in place.

10) Opening the DVD in PGCEdit I click no to fixing the stream numbers, then abort and close the dialog to search for BOV - skip canceling that one if you’ve added any of course.

11) In PGCEdit in the tree on the left, at the very bottom are my 2 titles - (a.k.a. cell play lists). The bottom one is the one I want to edit, so I select it and click the button for Edit PGC. Scrolling down to the last cell, I work my way up deleting cells I don’t want - again starting at the highest numbers avoids a LOT of confusion. To delete a cell I just click the remove cell button, make sure *only* the bottom check box is checked, then move the slider until the highest cell number I want to delete shows, then click OK.

12) Proceeding through the cells I don’t want, highest to lowest, once I’m done I click OK. When I save the DVD in PGCEdit it’ll ask to remap times for me - click OK.

13) Close PGCEdit & test.
