How are you capturing (firewire? Analog?...) and what format is your drive? (ntfs? fat32?) I can easily capture multiple hours into one file via firewire.

If you are using Windows 98 or ME, then you are limited to maximum file size of 4gig because of the FAT32 harddrive file structure. This is approx. 18minutes of DV video. If you want to capture more video at one time, you need to update to either Windows XP or 2000.

If you are already using XP or 2000, you need to format your harddrive as NTFS. It is probably FAT32 right now.

I can't seem to capture more than 15 minutes of video at one time. The capture program cuts off. I have a 150 gig hard drive with 4 hours of video space. So what do I set to do that? I have vegas 4.0. Is there a way to do this? Please help.

Did you not understand the above answers?

Hi,

What operating system do you have? FAT 32 and NTFS are file allocation systems
on the hard drive. If you have FAT 32 you are limited to 4 GB of video capture.
It is not limited with NTFS. Windows XP will work with either, but changing over
to NTFS will ruin all of your data. However, you must have NTFS to capture long
clips. XP asks what file system you want when you install it. You should choose
NTFS. I believe you can convert it TO NTFS without having to re-install your
operating system, but I think you will lose your data. If you change from FAT 32
to NTFS you cannot go back, at least not without debugging the drive and re-
formatting it. Basically, for the best video editing performance you need Windows
XP and choose the NTFS option when you install it. Hope that helps.

And also make sure the capture time setting is OK in the capture Options.

If you capture video using VidCap (the Vegas capturing program) then it will automatically chop your video into 3.99GB chunks, allowing you to capture continuously until your tape runs out or your disk is full. The 4GB point comes at about 18 minutes. You can set this point by going into the VidCap program "Options," then "Preferences," then "Disk Management."

Windows 98SE and ME use FAT32, which has this 4GB limitation. As mentioned, it's not a limitation with Vegas at all. If you use the "NTFS" file system (WinXP) then there is no 4GB limitation in the first place.

Converting a disk from FAT32 to NTFS can be done several ways. If you use a really cool program called "PartitionMagic" then the conversion can be done without wiping out the data already in that disk. For that matter, you can convert back the other way, too, if you feel like it. But again, as least as far as Vegas is concerned, either FAT32 or NTFS work equally as well.
