How to change mpeg codec?

I have a powerpoint presentation that will be showing on other random PC's and my Vegas Video keeps encoding the mpeg that I'm putting in the show with Ligos MPEG Video Decoder but these other PC's do not have this codec so the video does not play. I cannot seem to find anywhere where I can choose what codec I want to render the mpeg with. Anybody know of a solution to this? My deadline is like...this evening!

What version of Vegas are you using? Also, mpeg itself is the codec. If it's mpeg-1 then windows media player will play it. If it's mpeg-2 you need a mpeg-2 program to play it.

I'm running Vegas Video 4.0 and it was MPEG-2. On my PC (the publishing PC) both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 play in Windows Media Player. But once the show is running on another PC it would just be a black window in powerpoint. So you're saying I should be using MPEG-1 for this?

Windows does not contain an MPEG2 codec. Unless the other people's computer has one installed (which they either have to purchase or obtain it from a software package like PowerDVD) they will not be able to play back any MPEG2 files. Windows does come with a MPEG1 file.

Ok, I rendered as an MPEG-1 then went to insert into PowerPoint and got an error immediately saying "PowerPoint couldn't insert a movie from the selected file. Either the file is non-standard, or QuickTime is not installed properly." Now normally at this point I would consider this a PowerPoint issue except that there is another MPEG video in this presentation that was not made by me, long before I came to work here, and it plays just fine in the show. And what in the world does it have to do with Quicktime?? I'm at a loss here.

Since it's for a powerpoint presentation, why don't you try Video for Windows? That should work on all windows workstations, if I'm not mistaken.

I did render as wmv first, but for some reason the end movie clip has black space on both left and right sides instead of making the video the full original 720x480.
