How to control 3d rotation axis?

TeetimeNC wrote on 10/1/2009, 7:27 AM
I am trying to do a simple 3d rotation, but can't get the desired result. When I rotate an event 180 degrees about the Y axis, the event appears to shift a bit along the X axis. I want it to rotate about its center. Any suggestions?

Here is an example of what it is doing: http://s697.photobucket.com/albums/vv334/teetime17/?action=view&current=3dPanelRotation.flv

Here is my setup. The only change at the keyframe is the Y rotation changes from 0 to 180.

EDIT: Changed "orientation" to "rotation"

Thx, Jerry

use the rotation instead, see if that works.

but it works, I've done it dozens of times before.

Sorry, I meant rotation, not orientation. I did use rotation and if you look at my example clip, it clearly moves off axis during the rotation.

oh. that looks fine to me. odds are you're thinking it's wrong because of the perspective.

I'd say, it could be an optical illusion because it's so close, and Vegas doesn't allow for a lens perspective modification. I'd actually put a vertical stripe in the middle and see if it actually moves left to right, or if it just looks that way.

Yes, you are right. The perspective is inappropriate for the effect I am trying to achieve. I want to have a matrix of cards that individually flip 180 degrees to display a message (sorta like the trick you've seen at football games where a section of the stadium holds cards over their head and on cue flip them to show a message.

I don't think there is a way to overcome the perspective in Vegas since there is no concept of a camera and lense which would allow me to place the card at a distance and zoom in to flatten the perspective. Looks like a job for After Effects.

See if John Rofrano's tutorial called 3D Track Motion: Changing the Pivot Point is of any help.

I'm pretty sure you're looking at something that would be far easier in AE of that there's no doubt. just export a PNG seq. back to vegas and then if you need to change small sections you can re-render only what needs to be changed and it will replace just those frames.

that's my standard AE + Vegas workflow, though Frameserving works well also.

if you want it at a distance, just move it back on the z.

or don't even mess with 3d & do 2d & shrink the whole track. It looks like it's farther back then.

Jerry

I could not access your clip .
e-mail me a veg ..i can have a squizz and see if I can help in some way
roryc@tsogosun.com

I can visualize what you want to accomplish
Make your panels square in track motion this might lesson the distortion
