how to cut out a piece of an audio track using the trimmer

I've been recording in Audacity and then exporting a .wav file which I bring in as an audio track/media

To remove dead air, I'm trying to remove a couple of seconds using the trimmer.  I can open the audio track in the trimmer.  I think I'm selecting the segment I want to delete (I'm swiping with the cursor and the segment is highlighted).  But at this stage, the cut icon in the trimmer icon bar is greyed out.

I've been searching in the online help for a while and can't find what I need.

Can someone please help me please?

Thanks!

You cannot remove segments in the trimmer. You can select segments in the trimmer to add to the timeline. You need to add your audio to the timeline and then remove the dear air segments.

Or select the segment that you want to keep in the trimmer and add that to the timeline.

The trimmer is used to select what will be added to the timeline.

david-tu,

sounds like you're saying I can remove the dead-air segment from the audio track IN THE TIMELINE.  Am I understanding that correctly?

Yes, once you place it on the timeline, you can edit away. But this does not affect your original audio. Your original audio track will stay exactly the same.
