How to do split screen comparison?

I'd like to do a split screen comparison between the HD output from 2 different NLE's. I can render the same clip in each NLE and then import them as two separate tracks, and I know how to use pan/crop to merge 2 separate tracks into one final split screen result.

But when I render this final output I'll be re-rendering both input streams, and it seems to me this will invalidate the comparison. So is there any way to create the final split screen output without re-rendering both inputs?

Use an ultra-high bitrate, or uncompressed output.

You need a lossless and efficient codec such as MagicYUV used in 32bit mode compositing in VegasPro to do this kind of comparison between source codecs.
