How to do this compositing effect...

briggs wrote on 2/27/2003, 9:08 PM
I'm trying to duplicate an effect where an event is all black & white except it's color inside of a moving/resizing box.

For an example of what I mean, view the "Photo Shoot"

[edited post: whoops, I meant "Behind the Scenes" movie, sorry]

movie at http://www.bluecoremedia.com/movieclips.html and look from 1:23 to 1:53

Any ideas on how to achieve this with V4?

Thanks,

-Les

Track 1 - use a cookie cutter effect to limit the area you are viewing and a secondary color corrector to isolate the color you want to show through.

Track 2 - same video with a Black & White effect applied.

The black & white will show in ALL areas except where the secondary color corrector and cookie cutter let the specified color show through.

Didn't look at the vid (don't have QT installed) but think I know what you mean.

You could always try following this tutorial but replace the pixellate plugin with the black & white plugin, and use a retangular cookie cutter instead of the circle.

You might need to change the cookie cutter 'method' setting as it's default '...all but' setting.

Man, those are some impressive clips. I wonder what cameras Bluecore uses. Could that be 24P HD? It looks awesome.

The only thing I noticed was a scene where the ladies were on the steps with umbrellas. It changed from black and white to their umbrellas being colored. I think this could be done, possibly, with just several secondary color-correction fx. That's just a guess. I've done things like change the color of jeans in some experiments, but not tried it with black and white footage.

Those were impressive videos, however. How much you think they charge for a wedding? Probably strospheric!

Hey, Slacy! They were almost as good as your Bar Harbor Video!

Hey Paul! Wow, I forget how small the Vegas community is.

Oh man, if ONLY I were creating stuff of that caliber. Though I must say, the source footage is more impressive than the editing. Regardless, it's a beautiful presentation. Some of it had the texture and quality of film. Perhaps it was.

Yes, I imagine the price tag would be a few coins north of stratospheric. I've never been a big fan of wedding videos, but even I wouldn't mind having something of that caliber. Really elegant, moving stuff.

Paul and others...

My apologies... The correct clip I should have listed is the one that says "behind the scenes", still at http://www.bluecoremedia.com/movieclips.html

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a try.

Any other how-to ideas on this one from the rest of you V4 wizards out there?

Thanks again.

I don't have Vegas 4 (yet) but I have used this effect in VV3 and it's quite easy.

1. Take the clip that you want the effect on and copy it.
2. Paste the copy directly under the original (on a separate track of course) make sure they are lined up exactly.
3. Add the B&W filter to the bottom clip
4. Add the cookie cutter filter to the top clip
Make sure you choose the "Cut away all but section" option under Method
5. Adjust the size and shape of the cookie cutter
To make it easier, mute the video on the bottom clip (this will give you your cut out on top of a black background.)
6. After you have adjusted the cookie cutter, simply unmute the bottom clip and presto! your done.

Tip: If you want the colored section to move around the screen or follow an object or person, just use the keyframes. Also, feathering the border of the cutter will make the transition from B&W to color more smooth.

Cookie cutter has the limitation of a fixed aspect ratio of its cutters (square, rectangle).
This amazing video has the color box change form a square to a rectangle, etc.

You can acheive same results with full control by:
1. Duplicate the video track
2. Track 2 to 100% Black and White
3. Track 1 - Keyframe Event Pan/Crop from a square smoothly to a rectangle, etc. (Don't forget to uncheck the "Stretch to fill frame")

It would be nice if I could change the aspect ratio and not just the relative size. For example, squeeze the shape of the rectangle but not deform the video within it. I figured out how to do that without the cookie cutter but by using a mask and a parent/child track, but then that won't let me have a border.

Thanks again.

Perhaps you could use the debugmode 3D plugin to create morphing mask shapes.

Any idea how they did the butterfly thing? This is the second time I’ve seen that effect so I assume there is a package that does it.

The butterfly was created in After Effects. I came across his site and videos from an article on Wedding Videos in the April 2003 issue of Camcorder & Computer Video. They referred to him as the "Steven Spielberg of the wedding video industry." He shoots with an XL1 and a Sony DSR-500WS; edits with Final Cut Pro.

But how do you put a colour border around the box that we are moving?

Paul.
