How to fix render crashes on Vista / Win7 (32 bit)

Mad Pierre wrote on 2/18/2010, 6:49 AM
I've posted this to hopefully help others who have the same problems I have had. If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32 bit versions) and are experiencing Vegas Movie Studio crashing when rendering (especially from HD footage m2ts files) then this may help.

I cannot take the credit for the fix it is a summary of advice from the following two threads:
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=695038
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=12&MessageID=695663

The fix

1. The 2Gb memory cap problem

Download and install CFF explorer from [url=www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php]
Run CFFExplorer as Administrator
For each of the following files: VegasMovieStudioPE90.exe, VegasMovieStudioPE90k.dll, Sonymvd2pro_xp.dll, m2tsplug.dll, mcstdh264dec.dll, wmfplug4.dll
Note: Some of these are found in the FileIOPlugIns subdirectory. The Sonymvd2pro_xp.dll is found twice (once in the main directory and again under the plugins).

Open the file in CFFExplorer.
On the left side you'll see "NT HEADER".... "DOS HEADER"... etc
Highlight "FILE HEADER" under "NT HEADER"
On the right side you'll see a chart and in the bottom right corner you will see "CLICK HERE"
Click on that and a check box menu system will open.
Scroll down the menu list until you see "app can handle > than 2gig address space" and check that.
Save the file and close.

2. Allow User apps access to more than 2Gb virtual memory
Start>All Programs>Accessories and right click Command Prompt.
Select run as administrator
Type: "BCDEdit / set increaseuserva 3072"
Hit enter.
Restart your PC.

That should be it. Don't worry it's not as complicated as it sounds!!
Try rendering some movies in VMSthat you had problems with.

The steps required to fix this are different for other versions of Windows:

For 32-bit versions of Windows XP. Credit goes to blink3times and me.

For 64-bit versions of Windows. Credit goes to blink3times.

YESYESYESYES!
Blink's memory cap workaround did not solve my frustrating render problems until I, a 32-bit vista user, entered the command prompt. This works! Thanks so much!

Works like a charm. You saved me about 250 hours of frustration. Thanks.

Hi there Pierre,

I managed to do all of the first part of your fix ok but for some reason I cannot get it to accept the command prompt.

I think I've tried almost every combination of typing but none have worked for me. I don't know much about this sort of programming and need to know exactly what to type. Do you put the inverted commas in each end, and should there be any spaces? Is it a mixture of upper and lower case as stated in your fix?

I am running Vista Home 32 bit

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Barrie

Once you've got the Command Prompt window showing, and you're running it as an administrator, then you type:

BCDEdit /set increaseUserVA 3072

in that window, just like that, all in one line, without any quotation marks. (It might be optional to put a space after the slash... I don't know.) It doesn't matter what mixture of upper and lower case characters you use. You can probably just copy and paste that string from this window into your Command Prompt window. You have to press the Enter key after you have typed that line in the Command Prompt window for it to be executed.

I did exactly that, and after entering that, command prompt tells me : ... is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Advice?

HI Guys.
I'm using 32-bit Vista and I had random crashes all the time, as well as a repeatable hang when rendering (as in, it would always hang at 69% when rendering project x). My copy of vegas studio plat. is now very stable. Here is how I fixed it:
1. Always run "as administrator." google "always run as administrator" to learn how to do this.
2. Run in XP compatability mode. Again, google for specific instructions.

After I did these things, Vegas Movie Studio Plat 9.0b was stable as hell.

Good luck you guys.

That sounds like great advice, BreachPattern. Certainly, what you have suggested is very easy to try so that anyone should try it first (unless they are using Windows XP!). If that doesn't solve the problem, then try the approach discussed in the first post in this thread.

Luckynugget:
What operating system are you using? Could it be Windows XP? If so, you will get the error you got, and you should be using another approach specific for your operating system. See the second post in this thread for links to the directions for other versions of Windows.

I was in a different forum and they listed this one, so I will try again. I am running Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0 on a Vista 32 bit Operating System. I have had no problems with Movie Studio until recently when I started using HD capable equipment. The video is choppy/lag when watching the preview. It will render small/short video, but a larger 15 minutes,it crashes at 1% and shuts down the program. I can't find some of those files listed, and even though I set up CFF Explorer to always run as administrator,it still does not let me apply the change to the file I did find. The only file I could find is m2tsplug and it wouldn't let me overwrite it.
Also when I watch the unedited HD video through just the computer it is "laggy"
If anyone can explain this to me and what I am missing and/or doing wrong, please do. I am behind on two projects because they won't render.
Thank You

Rory

Regarding lagginess, you need Platinum 10 to get full speed AVCHD decoding. Regarding the rest, someone else might help you with.

I just did the fix for 32bit vista. I could change a couple of the files as directed, a couple others I got the message that I could not overwrite them. Once I figured out how to do the comand line thing it worked for me.

I'm having these exact problems at the moment, i've downloaded the CFF Explorer and gone to do the rest, but i dont have those files you've listed... Im guessing because i have Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0 and these are for Pro or Platinum or whatever the other versions are called?!

Does anyone know which files i should be opening with CFF instead?

P.S I tried to run as administrator and in XP compatibility mode with 0 effect =(

oh, and i should point out, im running Win7 x64-bit
