How long do you need it to be? I've done a ticker that scrolled about as fast as i could read it (and i read really fast) for over a minute. That's a lot of text. If you do hit a limit, add another text event to continue. If you align them carefully there won't be any visible break where it changes from one to the next.

You are indeed limited, but not by anything unreasonable.
Set the text you wish to use, and then use keyframing to set it's position as it moves across the screen. You'll need to use numbers as opposed to dragging, but the max is 4k wide. if you need more than that, then create another text event with matching keyframes, that starts after the first event.
