How to generate with an 'older' codec

Does anyone know where I could find a codec from version 8 of Media Player?

Our computers at work are locked down & have Media Player version 8 installed. It appears the current version of Movie Studio I have uses a codec found in version 9.

In a sane world I could just have the codec downloaded from the M/S site - but the 'managed environment' we are in prevents me from doing that.

I'm assuming you want to render an avi on one PC and then play it on a different, locked down one? You could *check which specific video codecs are installed on the locked down PC and then see if you've got the same one on your rendering system - WMP isn't the only source of codecs. Even if you don't already have it, you'll know what you're looking for.

I was able to get to that panel on my home Windows XP computer & can see the list of codecs on my home computer.

On the work 'managed environment' computer - the hardware tab is not visible!

If your work machines have WMP 8 installed, compatibility should not be a problem. The Windows Media 9 Video and Audio codecs are mostly backwards compatible with WMP 8 codecs. As long as you do not use any of the new "WMP9 only" technologies, such as the WM Video 9 Advanced Profile or WM Audio 9 Professional, your videos rendered using the WM9 codecs should play back in WMP 8 just fine.

Check out http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/codecs/compatibility.aspx

If for some reason it won't work for you, you can always download the V7 version of the Windows Media Encoder from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/WM7/encoder.aspx

Output your video in one of the supported formats and use WME7 to transcode it using the V7 codecs. Those will definitely play back on WMP8.

Hi, Thanks for the suggestions.

What happens at work is as soon as you try to view the video clip - Media Player says you have to download the version 9 codec - which installation is then blocked by the ($*#@%) managed environment.

Can I get some more info. on the steps involved to retrieve and use an older codec?

I downloaded the Codec Installation Package for Windows Media Player 7.1 or later (Windows XP version) from the M/S site.

I then went into M/S Windows Movie Maker and retrieved one of my clips created with the Sony software.

When I went into the 'file' 'save movie file' I was hoping I would see options to select the version 7 codec but did not see it.

Am I using the right program? I don't know what WME7 means.
