How to get best preview?

I've got a very 'visual' editor who wants the previews to be as close to what the end viewer [BlueRay?] will see.

Novice at HD . . .

I've got a HD TV connected to the HDMI of the display card. Previewing a HD project is not smooth.

I'm understanding this is a function, primarily, of the processing capacity?

Any adjustments/settings that will improve?

Also, render full resolution to an AVI and Windows Mediaplayer cannot play smoothly. Too much data for a PC to play?

You should at least be able to get 1080 WMV to play smoothly.
That you can't achieve that says your system could use some improvement or else you've got other tasks eating up CPU cycles.

I have noticed with Vista 64 and my gigabyte X38 motherboard which has many IRQ's and SATA Sony burner that the automatic cd rom detect and opening when inserting a disc or booting will temporarily freeze all actions including booting until it is done doing it's sensing or whatever it is doing. All auto detect cd rom stuff is shut off and it still does this. When I say freeezes the boot I mean it stops it until it goes through it's cycle which is usually about 2 to 6 seconds. During this action the USB mouse doesn't work. Sometimes it will do this action three times before it stops and the networks (searching) are somehow involved. This is really annoying and affec ts the preview also.
