This one has been asked for many times. Hopefully SoFo/Sony is listening and will put it in a future release. As was already pointed out, the date information is available in the media pool listing and elsewhere, and you can then manually place a title over the video and have this pop on the screen.

However, I suspect what you want -- and certainly what I've always wanted -- is the ability to have a FX that simply reads the date/time code from the tape and automatically puts that on the screen, like the date and time that you used to be able to put on the screen with an old analog camcorder.

There is a "Timecode" FX, but that timecode relates to the project. What is needed is simply an extension of this feature that reads the date and time and displays it.

Now, while we're at it how about a way to read, write, and display the line 21 VBI closed caption information? I guess this OT, but I couldn't help myself.

I still could not find the date. I looked into the media pool but the date/time stamp entry is empty.

I did capturing with Vegas 4 without change any of the settings. How do you guys do it? Anything I need to modify in the settings in order to get date/time stamp?

where do you guys get it? Is this a standalone capturing program or a plug-in for Vegas 4?

You should look at the clip properties in the vegas capture program.
I bellive that the data/time is kept in the default.sfvidcap file.
If Sony can provide a way to access this information via script it will be great.

Did you capture this video from an external source passing through the video camera, or were you capturing from a tape? I could be wrong, but I think the date/time info is only embedded in the DV stream when it is being recorded to tape. You may not get date/time from a pass through.

John - it's already there - if you apply Timecode FX to a clip at Media Pool level, your camera timecode (but not date) appears in Preview.

This is for DV footage, not pass-through.

I use it during the early stages of a project, then remove it before finishing.

Very true. Pass through will not work.

Never setting the time on the camera might be trouble too. Or perhaps if there's an internal battery responsible for keeping the time then it could be dead.

Just possibilities.

This is a direct capture from my Canon DV, and the cam time was set right. I have no trouble displaying date/time plus other time in the DV cam. I just can not find the date/time after capturing to PC

If you're previewing to an external monitor, many DV cameras or decks have a setting to display the time/date info on the screen. Turn this on while previewing through a firewire-connected DV device to an external monitor.

It would be nice if Sony (still not used to saying that) developed a "Time/Date " effect similar to the current "Timecode" filter.

In one of my posts to this forum, I'm trying to get rid of date/time on the tape (I had it showing when I recorded the tape).

Here's what we'll do: Let's just trade tapes. Mine has all the date and time you want. And I'll take yours without the date... :-)

Hehehe, No way. I do not want date/time stamp on the tape, rather, I want that information to be available to create titles.

All of the date time info for EACH FRAME passes through firewire into Vegas when capturing from a miniDV camera. The reason that this is true is because if you capture video with Vegas, then burn it back to a different miniDV tape via Vegas, you will get all of the date time info per frame on the new tape.

This being the case, it seems like it would be easy for the Sony gurus to write a software plug in to capture this info on to still captures, if a person so desired it - like myself. Of course, once upon a time, I believed in Santa Claus too ...

Another thing.
I, too, downloaded the trial version of Scenalyzer. My big beef with capturing stills from Scenalyzer is that the quality of them is not near as good as when capturing stills with Vegas (yes, I had both of them at their highest quality settings).

There is a program called DV_DateCode, available at

that will read a DV AVI file and output the date and time codes. There are three output files.
a .txt file that just has the date/time info
a .sub file that I don't really know what it is for and
a .ssa file. This is a script for use with Sub Station Alpha that can generate a "subtitle" file. Look at

I have the same problem as Wolverine and the date-/time stamp column in the Media pool detail view is empty. But the information is in the file as I can see it in the Clip explorer in the Vegas capture program.

Did anyone actually find a solution to this? I run 4.0c, is this by any chance solved in 4.0d?

I have not been able to make this happen in Vegas. It happens with Premiere, Scenalyzer and eveyother editing package I have used. But, when I capture a clip from miniDV using Vegas and print it back out to tape, the date/time stamp on the tape it that when it was printed back out, not when it was shot. This happens even if no effects or transitions are applied to the clip. If you can get it to read back out the date and time it was shot, please tell me what capture and print settings you are using.

I run 4.0d so upgrade to 4.0d will not solve the problem. Now I use Scenalyzer to find the date of the clips.
