Actually, I discovered a free program that will do batch renames based on date/time stamp info;
DVdate (free for noncommercial use) at http://paul.glagla.free.fr/dvdate_en.htm

but I still would like to be able to use a feature in Vegas to check on the timeline.

There's a whole heap of metadata recorded by some cameras, more so if you use the expensive tapes with memory chips in them.
On the upside and looking to the future Vegas was the ONLY NLE at Sony's EX1 roadshow that got the metadata displayed on the timeline.

Do you have a firewire DV camera or deck connected to your edit computer as a preview device?

If so, turn on the "Time/Date" display feature on the cam or deck.

This will show the time and date as recorded on the tape on the external monitor.

This only works if you haven't rendered the files on the timeline.
