How to get Vegas to stop scaling video?

I appologize for the basic question, but I have searched for the last 3 days through help and tutorials and online stuff and cannot find an answer. All I want is for my 500 x 200 video to come in as 500 x 200 and stay centered. I just want a border to exist around it. However, Vegas just defaults to scaling it up to fit the project size. I can force it to keep its aspect ratio, but it still wants to scale it up to fit one of the two directions. Even when selecting the Disable Resampling dialogue. The video event pan and crop is no help also. Is this due to the originating file being an MPEG?

Size is related to the Project Settings and the codec used. IF your project settings are for a DV, then it will set to 720 x 480 (for NTSC) because that is the standard for DV.

Try to set your project settings to a different codec and resolution.

Assuming you still want to use a common frame size for your finished project like 720x480 but want your video to be smaller and appear centered with blank space around it instead of pan/crop, try track motion.

For version 5 its at the extreme left of any video track, the second icon from the left. From there you could pick 3D Source Alapha, then gain access to various controls to adjust size/rotation etc...fun to play with.

For rough adjustments drag a corner in the workspace, for more precise plcement enter values or click on the little arrows under "position" to alter X, Y and various other things.

The 3D Source Alpha method works, thank you. However, I don't understand why it is necessary. It doesn't make sense to calculate for something to be blown up to fill the screen and then recalculated to transform it back to its original dimensions. Yes, I am producing a DVD so I want the output to be 720 x 480, but the video in one section should not be scaled to fit.

I want to keep the original integrity of the source video (or as much of it as there is) and not do double duty to it by having Vegas destroy it by reinterpolating it. I cannot just set the project to be the size of the source video because then every DVD creation package I've used still wants to blow it up to fill the screen (720x480), voiding what I want to accomplish. I cannot find a program which will take my video and just add a solid color around it filling the extra area with just black. Everything wants to interpolate the video up.

Well, there's other things you can do as well. Go back to pan/crop and be sure that aspect ratio is checked. Note the nine handles in the work area. Click on any corner handle and drag out while you're holding down your left mouse. Again, you'll have a border. Your video will scale but relative to the frame size of your project, so your project will have a frame size of 720x480 suitable for a DVD, but your source video can be whatever size you want it, in effect having borders around it. There's other ways too, but these seem the two eaiser methods for what you want.

You have to put your video on a new track and then use Track Motion, enter 500 and 200 for Position- Width and Height.
