How to import images made transparent in photoshop?

I've gotten into the Vaast DVD and hit a snag here. Tried using the magic wand and deleting the white bg, then making an alpha channel. No matter what format I save it as it is not transparent when it is opened in Vegas. Tried inverting it as well in photoshop as the DVD advises for Avid, but that doesn't work either.
Any thoughts on how to do this? Thanks for any help!

Sometimes need to right click the event/image, and select Properties, and then in the Media tab, select premultiplied. (in Vegas)

In Photoshop, select File/New and in the lower part of the dialog (Contents), click Transparent.

In my experience, whatever looks transparent in PS is transaparent in Vegas without needing to fiddle with Alpha channels, etc.

Usually, tga, png, psd, gif all show up right, but depending on the system configuration, occasionally they'll show up with a white background. never gotten a solid reason why, and it seems to be system specific.

Weird. but thanks for the help. Gotten psd and png to work so far, but nothing else. The Vaast dvd recommends pict or targa, neither of which I've gotten to work. But, if psd works, why would you want to use anything else?
Also, I'm still trying to figure out how to set the pixil ratio with Photoshop CS and Vegas. The photoshop for NLEs book that came out a little while ago seemed to say that Vegas could compensate for the square pixils that ps gives you. Should you still set things in photoshop cs to the d1/ ntsc dv (.9) setting?
Sorry for all the questions, but photoshop is so different and the dvds seem more geared towards mac and avid.

I had he same problem exporting images from Maya to Vegas. I solved it saving them in Maya in TGA format and, in Vegas, in the Media Properties tab, setting Alpha Channel to Premultiplied (or Straight, but this multiplies the RGB components times Alpha values, leading to darker colours...).

I didn't try with PNG or PSD, but I know from you now that PSD works. Good.

Bye.

You have to set background layer to transparent in photoshop. Then you will get transparant background.

You have 2 choices when working with still images.

You can create a 654*480 still in photoshop that will be the normal size once imported in Vegas. You can also make a 720*480 file in photoshop and choosinf .909 pixel ratio (this is only a visual reference in photoshop, the pixels are actually square when you save). When you import in Vegas, you need to go in the properties of the event and choose .909 pixel aspect ratio.

Which technique is better ? I wouldn't no, someone more knowledgeable would need to answer.
