How to interactively add video FX to media

Christian de Godzinsky wrote on 4/5/2008, 7:42 AM
Hi,

A stupid question (maybe) but I have not found a solution to the following:

How do I add media level FX - interactively - so that I can see and preview the effect on that media, before loading it into the timeline? If i preview the media (in this case an AVI file) in the trimmer, there is no option to add the FX at this time ?! Or is there?

I know better than well how to do clip or track level FX, and even how to copy and paste clip FX, but that is not the solution when you have a high number of clips sputtered along the timeline (from the same media file) that need the same kind of level or color tweaking.

Or is there a way for me to copy the FX from a clip on the timeline, and paste that FX to the whole media file? That would be a neat feature...

Might be that I have not digged in the UI enough, and I am a lazy manual reader...

Any help or comments are appreciated !!!

Best regards,

Christian

You can add the effect to the clip in the media pool and that will affect every event on the timeline made from that clip. Right-mouse-button click on the thumbnail and choose media effects (i think).

Nope, you can't audition/Preview a Project Pool media which you add an Fx, prior to Timeline. You HAVE to place it on the TimeLine. and roll your cursor over it.

I think you have run into a workflow issue of when to put FX on a clip in the media pool. If you know you are going to be breaking up a big clip into shorter pieces and the lightening is similiar throughout the clip, then you should color correct the clip in the media pool and then each "event" you put on the timeline will have the same FX.

Another way to do it, which might be difficult with large clips, is to put the first clip as an event on your timeline. Then tweak the FX on that clip. Then each time you want to use that clip, just copy and paste it on a new spot on the timeline and trim/shift/slip on the timeline.

"then you should color correct the clip in the media pool and then each "event" you put on the timeline will have the same FX." Yes, but what I think Christian was asking, and something I've just struggled with myself just a few minutes ago, is how do you interactively preview your FX when applying them to media? Sure you can preview your media FX via the convenient button, but all that does is start play from the beginning of the file, there's no pause control to freeze on a frame and view the FX applied to that frame while adjusting the parameters. Also, on a multicam shoot you want to match the adjustments among the different takes. When you have the events on separate tracks, you can use the splitscreen preview for this. But to do this matching on clips in the media pool you must bring them into the timeline [on separate tracks], do your matching, record the settings, then recreate those settings for each item's FX in the medial pool. I've looked and looked for some way to streamline the process, but so far, no joy.

You can bring the clip on to timeline, tweak the FX, then save that as FX chain. Then delete the clip on your timeline ( or just delete the FX, if the clip is edited.) and go back into your media pool and apply the FX chain at that level.

GREAT!!! Didn't know that the FX chain was copyable/saveable. Funny how something you never needed to use before becomes so elusive. That'll do it [It was the missing link and avoids the tedium of recreating the FX settings]. Years of Vegas, and every day is a new learning experience.

Thank you General ;>)

You're welcome, you may be able to step up in rank now.

Is that Bayside, NY, by the way? I'm in Brooklyn. It reminds of one my favorite quotes from Seinfeld.

Kruger: George, I don't get it. If there's no Human Fund, those donation cards were fake. You better have a damn good reason why you gave me a fake Christmas gift.

George: Well, sir, I - I gave out the fake card, because, um, I don't really celebrate Christmas. I, um, I celebrate Festivus.

Kruger: Vemonous?

George: Festivus, Sir. And, uh, I was afraid that I would be persecuted for my beliefs. They drove my family out of Bayside, Sir!

Festivus, the festival for the rest of us. Bayside, NY indeed. If you're ever in the city on a Wed or Thu nite with nothing to do, be my guest at a Movies101 class [Movies101.org]. Just let me know that you're coming so i can tell the armed guards to let you in [baysidebas at verizon dot net].

Hi,

Thank's to you all for all good comments. It slowly becomes clear for me how to proceed. I teared off some hair by trying to find the "save as" FX chain in the Video Event FX (in other words - at clip level). Why is it no there, but only at the track and bus level FX?

So, whenever I want to perform a media FX interactively, I have to place the media (or at least one clip related to it) on the timeline, put my cursor on top of it (to be able to see it in the preview), and then engage the TRACK FX window, and compose my chain. THEN I have to save the chain, delete the chain from the track, and in the project media window recall the just named chain and attach it to the media. FInally I delete my temporary track. Whooh...

If I compose my chain directly at the Media FX level there is no FX chain "save as" option, if I would like to use that chain again on other media.... Strange!

Why is it not possible to save a FX chain from a clip, or from media FX????? There seems to be room for some improvement here, Sony!!!

In addition, I have to reserve a separate video track (in an ongoing project that needs late track level correction - after already being cut), and do the trick I just mentioned... OK, I could open the media in a new project and compose my FX chains there, but that is not practical either.

I would personally like to seen that Sony adds the possibility to perform media level FX (and FX chain saving) in the TRIMMER window! I do not see any conflicts in such an great addition. On the contrary, you could do the tricks on your media, without the need to bring in them to the already crowded timeline. The trimmer acts already as a "prewiev" for your media, why not use it also for this purpose?

In addition, the chain "save as" functionality should be added to both CLIP and MEDIA level FX-windows.

These additions would make this editor so much more flexible, and make the workflow smoother... I love Vegas, but I would love it even more :)

Hope that some of you agree. If someone of you with connections to SCS thinks this would be a good functional addition, please the them know. Thanks for helping me understand how this works, or actually how it does not ;)

Yes you can. At the right end of the chain, you have assembled, click on the chain Icon, up comes Plug-In Chooser and go "Save As . . "

Grazie !

Thank's a zillion. Your guru status just again increased in my eyes :)

However, it is a little confusing when the track FX level window shows the "save as" button, but here (at clip or media level) you have to first click on the "add fx" icon to open the Plug In Chooser window, within you'll find the "save as" function. This IS confusing since it is not logical, but it WORKS when you know about it. Now I know.

Thanks for leading me in the right direction, I appreciate your input! I am still dreaming of performing this media-level FX compositing - not on the timeline - but in the trimmer window...

Christian

OK, now you have got this far . . You might also wanna know that you can share FX chains with friends, family, your accountant! You need to get and install the Preset Manager s/w - free here.

I'll let others expand on that one. Suffice it to say that over the past 4 years we have been sharing FXs around the Planet.
