How to join sub projects?

Venom wrote on 5/10/2002, 5:01 PM
From MSP I was used to split up a project in handy sub projects and join them together ('insert project') to render as a whole. Now, in Vegas, that ain't that easy. When I copy'n'paste a video track from one project into another I find that the FX chain (FX track) ist not copied with. Has anyone any hint how to best join together different Vegas projects?

I think you're missing the easy way of using Vegas Video. I doubt if anyone has more convoluted projects then I do which can span maybe 50-60 snippets of seperate video files and sometimes over a hundred audio files. I keep it ALL in one project file. Just one. Since Vegas is non destructive your source files remain as they were no matter how much you manipulate them in Vegas. For really complex projects you wouldn't want to start over from scratch I just create what I call generation project files. So if disaster strikes and somehow the project file gets corrupted you only lose the last generation and then you only need to rebuild from that point. So I typically have project Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Alpha 3 and so on. Each file is simply the same project a little further along towards completion. Even if you make a whole bunch they don't take up a lot of room and you can easily get rid of them all except maybe for the final one once your project is completed.

If you have a series of video or audio files you use the same way in many projects or just as a starting point instead of trying to pop in the project file, try popping in a rendered file of the needed sequence instead. You can split the tracks to cut and paste as needed or just add new tracks and the whole project goes together seamlessly. Anyhow my preferred method.

Thank you, BillyBoy. It wouldn't work that way in MSP, because it'll take way too much time to start and work with a project >30min & >200 snippets piling up to >5G source material... But, fortunately, Vegas is much faster and I guess - apart from splicing together the final output files - it is the only way of doing it. It just makes the media pool so crowdy... BTW, I use generation files - even when working on a 2 page Word document - been burnt too many times :(. For the moment I have the problem that I would like to take a 4min sub project with a tricky FX track into another project, but - whereas velocity and volume envelopes come with - the FX track information does not.

If you've created your "sub" project using vv30, you might consider rendering it. All your FX's will be integral to the newly rendered file which can then be dropped onto any VV project timeline.

Unlike other aps I've used, VV allows you to drop these files next to each other on a timeline, and they play seamlessly, as though they were created/rendered within that specific project. Other aps I've used sometimes leave a glitch that's hard to hide.

If I've spent a lot of time to get some special sequence just right, or if a section incorporates a lot of carefully positioned clips on mulitple tracks, I'll render that area to avoid the possiblity of inadvertently disturbing it as I move on to work elsewhere on the timeline.

The other advantage, of course, is that, once rendered, that section will play smoothly on my somewhat challenged PC (.9mhz Athlon . . . was prince (not king) of the heap when I bought it)).

Hope this helps.

but....there are times when it would be very nice to import another project, so you can tweak the settings consistent with the current project. This is not possible if you've rendered the first project.

the ability to import/merge/combine/insert (pick your adjective) 2 different .veg files is something I'd really like to be able to do. Is there a way?

If not, SF...add this to the list of vv4 enhancements.

I second that.

Sonic Foundry is well aware of this issue; it's been brought up many times in here and in the Video Factory forum. They have mentioned that it's a back-burner project. If you'd like to have them give it more attention, please fill out the product suggestion form at sonicfoundry.com/support/productsuggestion.asp. The more often something appears here, the more the developers will consider it.
