how to lessen an overexposed red background?

I'm editing a music instruction video that was shot in less than ideal lighting conditions with a red backdrop. When I apply a brightness/contrast effect to the video, it over exposes the red background and the red becomes too bright,,, is there a way to increase the brightness and contrast of the subject, yet somehow avoid making the red get too bright at the same time?

I believe the secondary color corrector is what you would need, I might be wrong though.

Probably the best way to remove color cast (unwanted hue) is apply the color's complement or OPPOSITE of whatever shade you're trying to remove. There's several ways to do it, See my tutorials. The first method works, but Color Corrector is superior and easier.

The way you describe it sounds lke reds are over saturated. If that's it you could try color curves either alone or with Color Corrector, but I would begin pushing the color wheels into cooler shades. Set white and black points first, which probably will get you close. All this assumes the WHOLE video takes on too much red. If only parts then use the Color Corrector Secondary filter.

Can I email you a still of this video I have to work with, or a short clip,,, I've been messing with these color curves and color correctors for hours and hours today and I can't get it to look right, it's driving me insane,, based on your tutorials, this should be a snap for you to tell me what to do,,, I'd reaaaaaaaaaally appreciate it!

Here are two links you might find useful. The first link provides a "cookbook" for how to reduce the intensity of red. Follow the same directions, but instead of reducing the saturation control, recduce (lower) the gamma setting.
