How to make a background image move with the same movement of video

Steve-Zoicks-Iconic wrote on 8/30/2021, 4:25 AM

We filmed a few clips with a handheld and a green screen. The problem I have is the background still image does not actually move with the video track so it looks rather weird. So how do I get the background image to actually follow the same motion caused by the handheld filmed video track so it actually looks like the background is moving in sync with the movement of the hand while it was filmed.

... use the Motion Tracker and copy the motion information. You will find some tutorial on Youtube.

I tried this and the background image remained still. Can you please copy a URL of youtube that explains how to do this.

Great tutorial!!

I agree...as usual, Scrapyard Films does a great job. The only thing I'd do differently is to apply the Picture-in-Picture effect to the image you're putting on the phone before transferring the motion data to it. Set PinP to fill the phone with the image the way you want it. Then transfer the motion tracking information to it. If you do this, your PinP settings will be respected and only the motion will be applied. In that way you can skip the step of going into the Pan/Crop tool to fix the stretching problem.

Hi guys, thank you for the help and advice. It worked and I was able to do it. It did create a little bit of a problem for me. When I was motion tracking the video track, I choose the shape to motion track the actors face. When I applied the Picture in Picture to the still image, what occurred was the still image motion was only based on the small shape I created with the Motion Tracker on the Video Track. So how do I apply the motion tracking to the still image so that the entire image moves in the same way as the motion tracking.

@Steve-Zoicks-Iconic I made a little tutorial showing how to do what you want. I believe that's it.

@gary-rebholz I always test every version of Vegas Pro when they come out and this is the first time in four and a half years that a version of Vegas Pro really impresses me and makes me happy. You and your team did a good job on this release. I realized there aren't many new features in VP19, but on the other hand you focused on the most important thing, which is performance and stability, not to mention the interface, which is very nice and beautiful. I'm sure the bugs that still exist will be fixed in later versions and VP19 will be the continuation of a great success story.

Thank you @joelsonforte.br for the video. It is very clear and accurate to what I am trying to do. Yet it doesn't seem to want to work for me. Each time I apply the motion tracking to the still image it shrinks to the size of the motion tracker of the video and I end up with a black background.

Here is a small clip to show you what I have been doing, while following your steps and the end result. Please tell me what I am doing wrong. I am baffled.

don't worry about the lag on the video preview window. Computer was playing up a bit.

@Steve-Zoicks-Iconic The difference is the "Mode" of the tracker and the motion information you copy. In your video you used "Perspective". This means you copy all parameters of a 3D movement - Location in X and Y (Translation), the Rotation (Euclidean), the Scale (Similarity) and all affine parameters (Affine + Projection).

Your problem is the scale factor within the "Perspective" mode. In your example you only need the "Location" mode in the motion tracker to copy the translation in X and Y direction. Enjoy!

Thank you so much to all of you. One little thing troubled me and it was understanding the parameters of Motion Tracking and you guys were terrific. Cheers to all, it worked as I was hoping using the location parameter
