How to make a Blu Ray disc that plays in PS3?

Hi!

Im trying to create a looping Blu-Ray disc (burnt on a DVD-R) that Playstation 3 would recognize as a movie disc. The following procedure gives a disc that is recognized as a Data Disc, I can play the clip by browsing to the correct folder but it does not loop.

I render 1920x1080 24p file in Vegas Pro 8 using the ready template. I bring it to DVD architect 5.0 and drag the rendered iso file onto the menu. Then from "end action" I choose "destination" to itself. Then I burn the it on a DVD. Im postive that I used this method some months ago and a normal Blu-Ray player recognized the disc and played it well, looping it and all.

Does PS3 recognize these discs differently or do you think Im doing something wrong?

I have a PS3 that I use to play 1920x1080 video rendered by Vegas on my HDTV. I have Vegas Movie Studio which means I can't make real Blu-Ray format disks with menus etc. (not until next week when Sony releases Vegas MS Ver. 10) so I just play the individual rendered files one at a time.

My guess is that your problem has to do with the PS3 software. Keep in mind that the player mechanism only reads the data off the disk and presents it to the software; its the player software (in your case the PS3 operating system) that handles all the user interaction stuff and other related actions (like where to jump at the end of a sequence.)

DVD Architect cannot author AVCHD disks (a.k.a. Blu-ray on DVD media) which is what you are trying to do. You need multiAVCHD, Blu-ray, AVCHD, DVD, HD-DVD authoring application, which is free:

DVD Architect should make Blu-ray disk on Blu-ray media that should play on PS3. I never tried that though. I always use multiAVCHD.
But DVD Architect cannot make AVCHD disk (Blu-ray content on DVD media) that will play on PS3. That's for sure.

OK, just found the disc that I burnt some months ago that I used in an exhibition of mine. It was a normal DVD-R that I burnt with DVD Architect as a Blu Ray disc with above method I explained. It doesnt start play from the menu either in my PS3, says its a Data disc. So most likely the Blu Ray player I used to play it back was a smart one :) I sure hope they got smart ones at my next expo when I go setting up monday :D

DVDa has no issues with real Blu Ray. I've done well over 300 both in mpeg2 as well as avc. It all works fine.

The AVCHD disks however are a different ball game.

Let me just chime in to say I have made "DVD Blu-rays", from DVD-A Pro 5, that play perfectly with full menus on my Oppo BDP-83. That said, those same discs do show up as "Data Discs" on my PS3. It's a shortcoming of the Playstation 3. It doesn't currently handle AVCHD/Blu-ray on DVD (probably a copyright thing). However, there are many video files it will handle that no other player can, so it's a trade off, I guess...

Yeah... I've had the same experience. It does SEEM to be a PS3 thing. I will say however that there are other programs that can do it without issue. So... is it PS3... DVDa... or maybe the combination of the 2

With DVDA I am burning 20+ minute Blu Ray movies with menus, incl Scene Selection, etc, on Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs for about 30 cents apiece and playing beautifully on Sony BD S370 (180 bucks). My Panasonic players would not play them and my sons PS3 treat them as a data disc and will play the files in the folder when you open the BDMV> Stream folder & click em.

In Vegas Pro 9, render settings I use:
MainConcept mpeg2 > produces an .m2v file.
Template: BluRay 1920x1080-60i 25mbs.
Separate Audio Render: Dolby Digital Digital AC3 Pro.

The 30 cent disc looks and sounds as good as using a 2 or 3 dollar BD and I don't need to wait til I have a large enough project to fill up the 25gig disc , to "get my monies worth."

So.... with this software and the right blu ray player you can put you br on standard dvd with great result and save a lot of money over the long haul.
