How to make text transaprent so only VFX show through?

Hi, I want to make this text be transparent, so only the Uni.Ecto distort effect shows as the text, without there being any base text outlines. I cannot lower the layer opacity since it effects the effect opacity too. How would I do this? https://imgur.com/a/2WYQxW4

I think frOsty is right. Apply the effect to a mask of the text. ... If you were using Vegas Effects, this is what I would do to mimic the effect.
