How to move clips around without them overlaying?

Hi,
I'm new to Vegas 9. I've been using FInal cut express. This is obviously a simple thing, sorry for my ignorance.

When moving clips around on the same video track, the clips don't 'part'..For example, I want to insert a clip between 2 existing clips and have those 'part' for the new clip instead of overlaying it. In Final cut, when you move clips around on a track, the existing clips make way for the clip you've inserted. What am I missing?

I would split (press S) the original clip at the point you want to insert the second.

Make sure Auto Ripple is highlighted. (Ctrl L)

Drag new clip to the split point.

When Auto Ripple is off, the clip overlays the original like you were talking about.

Thank you for your response. That seems obvious to me now.
