"How To" Question

Jameson_Prod wrote on 4/20/2006, 4:54 AM
I have a request to create an intro with a specific "effect" (it's not really an effect....but out of a lack of a better way to explain). I've seen this done on ESPN and several other places but am not sure if it can be done through Vegas or not....and if it can, how best to accomplish this. Let me try to explain:

Take full frame video of a person in action.....freeze the action....then pull out just the person and place them on another background, in my case around a centered logo.

Obviously I can do this type of thing through green screening but I have never pulled someone from "regular" video. Is this Benzier Masking? Is it a difficult procedure? Better way (or easier way) to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes,
you can do it with beziers. Probably couldn't do it with chroma keingy using live footage. Because there's no motion involved once the frame is frozen you could also take the frame in PS, separate the elements, put them on two tracks and and use track motion to move the person around in the frame.
What can look very effective is to move the person forward from the image and then rotate the two tracks so you get a side on view of the person in front of the background.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions Bob. This will give me some idea of how to get started. I'll experiment and see what I create.

Thanks again for your time.

The process is called rotoscoping. An effects program like Boris Red will do this.

Does the subject *move* after being placed on another background?

No...what I "think" they want is the action will "freeze"....the background will fade out...the subject will come forward somewhat......and then be moved/arranged/displayed with other subjects around a centered logo.

The example they used was an ESPN commercial and a basketball player dribbling down the court being pulled out and showing just him and the ball. I think Bob's suggestion of taking a snapshot of the frame and using PS to pull out the subject is the simplest way for me at this point. I haven't had a chance yet to play with it though.

Thanks.

If that's all that's needed, then yes, do a frame grab of the freeze point, take the freeze frame into Photoshop, mask out what is not needed, then place the masked image on the Vegas timeline, then put into whatever background is needed.

That's an easy one... :)

In a short vid I did last night I used this technique to "move" a triple jumper after the action has frozen. See "Triple Trouble"

I was able to pull the frame and take it to PS without any problem. Then was able to simulate what they wanted. I believe this is going to work OK. Thanks for the advice!!!

Jim...how did you accomplish your Triple Trouble. That was neat!

Thanks to all who posted for all the help and suggestions.

Jim explained it to me in this thread:
