How to record and render in stereo sound?

I have zero experience in this area so I'm not even sure if my question will make sense (this is my first post in the Audio forum), but is it possible to record a musician in stereo sound and then in the final video that is rendered, that stereo sound is still preserved? I know Vegas has the capability to edit and produce surround sound, so perhaps regular stereo sound won't be anything difficult?

Up until this point, everything I've created I guess is mono which I believe means that you get the same thing out of the left and right speakers, is that correct? I'm using a Canon XA-10 camera which allows me to input the left and right XLR.

That is the default behavior, so you need to look at your camera. Is it by chance set to record mono?

Stereo in = Stereo out in Vegas.

Also, check your mike. Some are stereo, some not (you probably have already done this, so I hope you are not annoyed by my advice).
