How to render 3:4 aspect ratio for miniDV footage

I'm working with footage shot on miniDV at 720x480, but my renders end up 16:9, with vertical black bars to the right & left.
When I import the footage, Vegas asks me if I want to "Set your project video settings to match this media". That should mean that the project automatically renders at the same aspect ratio as the source video. But this is not the case, and I'm not finding a render preset for this old-style footage.

Is there a switch in the settings to make Vegas use the footage aspect ratio?

3:4 DV at 720 x 480 has an aspect ratio of .9091. You will need to set that as your project properties as well as the properties of the media.

Most delivery these days, esp. online, doesn't support anamorphic PAR or interlace, only 1.0 progressive.

Multiply your storage width times the presumed PAR of .9091 to give you the square pixel width (DAR).

720x .9091 = 654 (nearest even number.

Set your 4:3 DV project like this initially to test with Smart Deinterlace method turned ON:

Some external encoders like Handbrake or Shutter Encoder do this for you.
