Is the tape physically damaged or is the signal on the tape just messed up?

I had a VHS that got crinkled several years ago and would break up when it played. I did not do anything to the tape and recently played it again. Apparently, the pressure of the wind of the tape eventually smoothed out the crinkles and the tape played fine. I made a DVD right away.

Hi Dave T2,
no, it is just the signal that is all messed up...streaky lines across footage etc, almost like smudges & smears...

DSE,
thanks for the link, I will check it out..

cheers
