How to Save from Video Capture

A few days ago several forumers tried to help me locate a "lost" file to no avail because I must have done something wrong in Video Capture. Anyway, today I tried again from the beginning. I opened Vegas Movie Studio, went to File & Viceo Capture. Connected (using a IEEE firewire) my Sony HC-52 to my computer, turned it on & went to 'Play' with the tape set at the beginning of 58 minutes footage. In Movie Studio video capture as soon as it turned on the HC-52 to play, the MiniDV images/film began playing in both my HC-52s open LCD panel screen & on my computer monitor. The video capture appeared to be working fine & after 58 minutes the 'screens' went blank & to stop the HC-52 I turned it off. Immediately, on my computer monitor, the following message appeared: "Sony Video Capture: An error occurred while capturing from the device. An invalid arguement was specified." And I had to click 'ok' to do anything further. That's where I am now. What should my next step be? Have I anything to 'save'? Did I immediately lose the video captured (but unsaved) footage when I turned my HC-52 off? Since I am still in the Movie Studio program "capture video" screen (on the capture tab, with the Sony Video Capture 6.0 + title of the project (Northern Mexico 1-2011 at the top of the screen page, can/how should I continue? Or was my turning off the HC-52 a fatal flaw for the 58 minute video capture? If I have to begin again, please tell me how I should be capturing video from my HC-52 to the Movie Studio program successfully. Again, this is my first effort to use Movie Studio having previously used Pinnacle programs (flawed as they were, I was able to get passed the video capture point). One additional question is there a good book that can help me with Movie Studio V. 10? Again, my apologies for my ignorance and thanks for any assistance. Bob

Have you looked in your Documents folder for your captured video yet?

They will, again, be AVIs whose name begins with whatever name you gave you tape, when prompted.

I've found Vegas MS 10's capture program to be the buggiest part of the whole program. You may want to consider an alternative, like WinDV or Scenalyzer, which also captures miniDV to DV-AVIs.

You should also make sure your hard drive is completely free of spyware and tmp files and is freshly defragmented, if you're going to capture your video to it. If you're saving an entire tape to your drive, that's a 13 gig block of contiguous space!

Steve, yes thanks Clips 1-135 did turn up today in my Documents, Vegas Movie Studio folder. Whew!!! The clips appear to have been saved automatically (default?). Thanks for pointing me there, as you did last week...but, I guess then I just messed up the process by thinking I had to 'save' to the Documents. Well, now I will open each clip into my new project. Again, many thanks.

Props to Steve, but you answered your own question in your other thread when you wrote this:

The mystery deepens...I found, as directed, my way from Capture Video to Disk Management and, indeed, under 'Path' there was one file folder...c:\Users\Bob Berzok\Documents\

c:\Users\Bob Berzok\Documents [the Documents folder is where your videos are being captured to]

rather than turning off your cam when the capture is finished, just click the Stop icon in VidCap. Turning off the cam is why you got the error, it was letting you know it lost connection.

MSmart: kudos for followup solution to my 'mystery' error message: (it should have been obvious to me, but, for my ignornace, wasn't) click stop in VidCap rather than turning off my HC-52. Vegas Movie Studio is beginning to shape up nicely thanks to you & others in this forum. I was able to open all the clips in the (vertical) video scenes and timeline...and now I'll feel more comfortable doing some serious reading of the pdf user guide/manual. Any suggestions for a book that would help me along?
