How to Selectively Rebuild Peaks -- Build *missing* peaks?

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 6/28/2024, 3:41 PM

I know that when the project loads, it will start building missing peaks.

I know there's a menu option to rebuild all peaks.

Is there an option somewhere to just build the missing peaks (so we don't need to close and re-open the project if we'd stopped the peak-building earlier)?

View - Rebuild Audio Peaks builds the missing peaks, not just "all" peaks, according to the status message at the bottom - left of the Vegas window: "Attempts to rebuild peaks for events on the timeline that are marked 'peaks not available.'" I couldn't find those words on any events, so I presume it's an internal property. I usually need to click the refresh button on Windows Explorer to get the SFK files to show. And the new Vegas 21 preference on the General tab to "Don't Create SFK Files" has to be off. I do not need to shutdown then restart Vegas when toggling that option, even though Vegas says you must.

The other interesting thing is a waveform shows on the timeline even if there isn't an SFK file. That would be when you enabled the option to Don't Create SFK Files and the option View - Audio Event Waveforms is on.

@Robert Johnston I wonder where they slave the waveform data if SFK is not built (enabling that new option), and if there are pros/cons to using that option?

I don't think it gets saved if you don't build sfk files (just stays in ram while the project is open). I chose the hidden sfk flag option for that reason.

When you choose not to have sfk files, the sfk files become temporary files in appdata\local\temp. The names begin SFK... and end with ...TMP. The menu option View - Audio Event Waveforms needs to be selected.

It can take a while to recreate the temp files from scratch each time you open a project. Of course you can always deselect View - Audio Event Waveforms.
