Are they a numbered sequence? If yes, then do a File - Open instead (make sure you check the "Open still image sequence" box.)

If you want longer than one frame, go to Options - Preferences - editing tab and change the still image length option.

How can I set the duration of each still when doing a batch drag and drop to the timeline?

Options -> Preferences -> Editing tab -> "New still image length (seconds)"

Thanks, jdv and jm. I'm now thinking of importing as one still per frame and then using a velocity envelope to increase the length to what works well, using multiple renders to .avi if needed (I forget what the max slowing is on the velocity envelope, I'm away from Vegas right now).

I re-read your original post. You might find my time lapse script useful. It takes exactly one frame from each event on the timeline. You can then render the resulting video and then stretch it out to make is last longer. Here is the link to the script:
