How to split AVI files

How can I split AVI files without recompression ?
What I need basically is to trim the end and the beginning of an AVI file.
I tried the option "Save as" including media export but here I get separate video and audio files.
Is it possible to export or save a portion as a combined audio and video AVI file ?
Am I missing something ?

I believe the freeware program is called VirtualDub.

If it's a DV AVI you can just render. As long as there are no effects or other changes the video won't recompress, just copy.

Im timeline just cut the portion if clip.realign the sound if needed and render back to AVI. As long as you did not added any fx the rendering will be quick.
No lose of quality. No need extrnal programs. In vegas preview window you can see hom much you want to cut.If you want to preserve the sound-just slide over and after cutting realign with video and render. Very simple.

Thanks for your replies.
I've been busy with preparing a DVD and could not check the clip export in detail until yesterday.
Clip export without rendering/recompression works fine if all settings (source, project and destination file) are identical. I had some files with lower field first and some with upper field first. If the project and destination settings do not match the source file settings Vegas would still render.

Is there a way to quickly tell which files are complying with the project settings and which are not ?
