How to "split" captured file ?

will-3 wrote on 2/6/2008, 7:42 AM
The Problem: We have had this happen before...
- We leave a cam on after a shoot... till the mini-dv tape runs out.
- and when we capture the file is very big and the last half is nothing.
- We don't want to have to 're-capture' the first half mini-dv tape.

Vegas uses 'non-destructive' editing... meaning it doesn't touch the original video source file...

The Question: So, how can we cut the original file and delete the last half?

Thanks for any help.

Put the video on a Vegas timeline and split and edit out the part you don't want. Render a new DV AVI file.

There will be no loss in quality as long as you add no effex to this render. Delete the original capture after you create the new file.

No, but the render will be very fast. It does a file copy so it is much faster than real time.

If you know this when you capture, just stop the capture at the point that video goes blank.

Also, if you know how long the video is, you can set the capture length in Vegas so it will stop capturing after a certain time.

Or set a timecode capture in and out.

I have an idea: Stop leaving your camera on after a shoot. ;-)
