How to stop Vegas from looking for old files

I have a simple problem. I have a template I made for a series I do. The template consists of an open, some generated graphics, and a close. I open the template and drop the new material on the TL beneath the graphics between the open and close. The open and close are nested files and I have changed the originals several times. Each time I open the template, Vegas insists on looking for the old, long deleted files for the open and close. I can completely remove the open and close leaving only the generated media and save the template with a new name, but Vegas still wants to search for the old files. If I tell it to ignor, everything is fine and the template opens. How do I stop Vegas from searching for these old deleted files? I know there's a simple answer, but brain is taking the night off, I guess.

Not sure that I follow all of that, but it sounds like you need to click on the Lightning Bolt on the Project Media Tab.

Have you removed the unused media references from the "Project Media" tab?

The lightning bolt didn't do it but deleting the files from the project media tab solved it. For some reason when I used the "bolt" it thought the files were still in use. Thanks to all.

Be aware that lightning bolt when pressed sometimes produces black frame renders or misnamed clips. I've stopped pressing it because of these problems. This is my speculation but I'll do anything to avoid problems & crashes.

Having been bitten many times by the black frames bug, I'm interested to hear that some think the 'clean unused project media' is related. I'll keep an eye out for this correlation.
