How would you do this effect?

I have a client who needs a few seconds of the video that we're doing to look like a movie film that jumped the sprockets.

Any ideas? I plan to apply a film-frame mask then use pan/crop to move the image into the "film".

It only lasts a second, so it doesn't have to be perfect.

The client is a stage producer and we are making the "silent films" portion of his production of "Singing in the Rain". If you have ever seen the movie, then you know what we're doing.

Hey, no music copyright issues - bring silent films back.....

Not sure I totally understand the "jumped the sprockets" part, but if you mean a jittery, skipping kind of look, I would stretch the timeline out so you can see each frame, then S - cut along the timeline in several places and delete a frame here and there. Apologies if this isn't what you're talking about....

If you can't find some kind of stock footage of that, you'd have to animate it--very expensive!

EDIT:
Found this clip at Creatas-Image for $189 for 10 seconds.

First I would create a sub project that has a wide screen ratio and center your standard footage in the center. Then add sprocket footage to the extreme left and right as if letterboxing on the sides. Render this to a new avi file.

Now bring that avi file into a new project and pan crop it to go off the edge and add jitter and blure appropriately. Exactly how you would accomplish each stage I cannot say but that is a strategy I would attempt.

If you want to film to look scratched you may want to add scratches and hairs to the sub project because no scratches should appear to the side of the film although some hairs might be seen there.

The "Oh sh**" response of the projectionist as he realizes this problem may add to the sound fx. Been there, done that.
