How2 edit from 0:00 on new clips on timeline?

MikeLV wrote on 8/15/2016, 1:53 PM
Suppose I have something on the timeline that is 23:16 (arbitrary) long. And I want to add a new clip to the timeline, but this new clip was the start of a new recording on the memory card. And I have edits written on paper that correspond to time starting at 0:00. In other words, how can I edit something from 0:00 when there's events already on the timeline? Do I have to start a new project and once the edits are done, just cut and paste the events to the main project timeline? I tried doing it in the trimmer, but I don't think the trimmer allows you to split the clip at various points.

I would say irregardless of what you think you are trying to do....

IN ORDER to become a serious video editor you have to understand timecode and especially how VegasPro treats timecode.. This is a topic that you need to burrow down into it appears.

I'm not asking about timecode. I just the time to start from 0:00 when I put a new event onto the timeline. Either I can or I can't. The only way I can see to do it is to make a new temporary project. All I'm asking is if there's another way to do it within the same project.

You can insert time before the existing material. So if your new sequence is 10 minutes long, insert 10 minutes of time. This will slide everything down the timeline 10 minutes.

One more option: add it on a new track above the other track(s) at the beginning or 0. Go down your paper list and split the "master" clip up into your clips you need. Then pull down the clips where you want them to use them.

You may want to mute the tracks below or isolate the track you are working on.

You can change where the project timecode starts from in Vegas, just RClick the ruler and select Set Time To. That's of limited use though.

Your fundamental problem here is using Project Timecode. You have to use Source Timecode for Edit Decision Lists to make any sense. To get Vegas to show Source Timecode you add the Timecode FX to the media in the Project Media window, there's scripts to automate that.

Once you understand that you'll realise that how you setup your camera(s) to generate timecode is also very important.

If you are just wanting to insert an event/new video onto the timeline starting at zero with the old video moving to the right turn on AutoRipple (Ctrl-L) and drag the new video onto the timeline at zero. Everything else will move to the right.

farss, you nailed it. The timecode fx is exactly what I needed! Now I can put my clip anywhere on the timeline and still see it start from 0:00 to make the edit. Perfect solution, wish I had known about that before!

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood what your question was. Glad you got it working the way you want.

Yeah I wasn't too sure how to word the question, but thank you for the tip about inserting time, that will come in handy too no doubt.

In my first post above I answer the OP with its "all about timecode" - then he replies it is nothing about timecode!!!!!

Then he gets the timecode lesson again and what do you know - its all about timecode.
Go figure?

Sorry videoitguy, didn't mean to disregard your answer. The other guy gave me a dumbed down "do this" answer which is what I needed.

Sometimes while lost in the trees - you need to look for the forest - GET context. It pays to know context JUST when you are seeking just the pine cones from a particular tree in the forest.
