Huge Output File

This is just too weird...

A 4 minute and 28second 60i 4:3 NTSC DV render just came out as 5.56 GB using all the default settings and some "normal" CC and Brightness/Contrast adjustments.

I didn't notice it until I Squeezed it to a Flash video...and it came out to 122 meg. I was like What the heck?

Any idea why Vegas 8.1 (on Vista 64) did that? Needless to say, that is not an acceptable filesize. :^(

Hold one.

I may have found the prob.

Yep.

I had some markers waaaaay out past the 2 hour mark and, of course, Save project markers... was checked.

So, the question now becomes why didn't all that "extra" blank space compress down to almost nothing, anyway?

For some codecs it does end up pretty much empty. WMV is one i've noticed that gets drastically smaller files when there are large stretches of solid color. Lots of other codecs adhere more slavishly to the average bitrate settings and will pump the file full of bits to maintain the average even when there isn't anything to encode.

Well, *I* vote they all should behave like the WMV codec. :^)

Anyway. Hopefully someone else will avoid the goof now that I've fallen victim to it.

Again.

(Yes, did this once before...a long time ago. Synapses apparently aren't firing as well as I age.)
