Where and when to use this "TV mode!"

When I unlock the aspect ratio I can obtain similar effect by cropping but with some image loss!
Is there any "correct" or "offical" position for this TV mode!
Like 1440 x 800 or similar?

I think there is no way to render my m2t's coming from my HC9e as seen in the a/m link without any image loss?
Should I switch to HV40 just for this TV mode?
