I love em' both, but the Z7 is a sweet, sweet camcorder. Used it on a few corporate pieces, and a couple skydives. Nice cam, fast to use.
If you don't need the bulk and large tape, no reason to move to the 270, IMO.
Also IMO, had the EX1 been more like the Z7, it wouldn't just be an incredibly hot camera in the industry, it would have been the ONLY selling camera in the industry.
There seems to be something odd about the S270 and I wish I could get a straight answer to this as we'd planned on buying a couple of S270s to replace our old PD250s.
The rear XLR connectors seem to ONLY record to channels 3&4!
That wouldn't be a problem except Sony tell us we'd also need their latest HDV VCR to play or capture the tapes. Worse still there's some uncertainty over which if any NLEs can handle HDV with 4 channel audio. Switching the camera into DV/DVCAM it's seem to mean the only way the rear XLRs would be live is in 12/32K 4 channel audio and even Vegas will not handle that.
If all of this is true Sony have really messed up on the S270. I hope not as there's quite a market for a tape based shoulder mount camera for events.
I shot some amazing scenes on a cruise cocktail party and one of the other features I love - DCC (Dynamic Contrast Control) - allowed some superb sshots with the background not being blown out while preserving skin tones. Like a backlight switch but much sweeter.
And of course the CF card - no need to say much more.

I had a tough time trying to get recording and monitoring working properly with a shotgun mic in input 1 or 2 and a line feed into 3 or 4 to go into 2 channels. What i though made sense didn't work... i just thought it was me being less experienced with 4 channel audio
The camera is good for event work and i get really good quality footage rendering to 576p 16:9 on DVD.
Shoulder mount is great, mic holder aint so great, zoom ring sucks, iris ring ok but its not a real one i don't think.
hdv is so great to work with one my machine, i know its not full hd but its so easy to use and being able to stream to vegas and record is good.
Pretty good options in the menu to match colour with other camcorders, didn't take too long to get an ok match on a montor to cut with z1p footage.
I rent a 270 from pro-cam up here is brisbane, aus. its a good value rent considering its a shoulder mount full size tape kit. They gave me a miller arrow 40 with sprinter II tripod and wow, i've never used such an amazing tripod in my life. It may be because i've been only using low end dv tripods that tripod kit s hot.
I'd love to invest in a z7p with a hard drive setup, just wish they had bigger hard drives.... would be perfect. But i love the archival value of a $50 276min tape.
not sure if this helps anyone, but i enjoyed using the s270, would love to play with a z7 especially since i've doing mostly SD stuff but love the extra resolution at the start.
